Description

“Butterfly” is a butterfly at the centre of a symmetrical mandala of lacy petals. Worked on black cloth.

What the picture shows

The butterfly's wings are spread and worked as a gradient from lilac and violet near the body to turquoise and mint at the tips, with a pale outline along the edge and a net pattern inside. A mandala spreads around it: several rows of pointed petals, small circles, arcs and dots in turquoise, mauve and ash. A narrow pendant of diamonds closes the composition below. Eleven colours, and the black canvas between the elements is deliberately left unstitched, so the mandala looks transparent. Beads pick out the centre and the petal tips. The mandala is not solid: gaps are deliberately left in it, and the black cloth shows through.
