Description

“Black oranda” — a golden oranda with lush veil fins on a black ground.

What the picture shows

The fish is turned to the side, its body curved, and almost half the piece is taken up by the fins and tail — long, wavy, stitched in bands of grey, steel and warm gold so that every ray is visible. The scales are laid in small rows and glow ochre; the eye is large and dark with a white highlight. Behind the fish bright red rays open out like fans, the only saturated colour in the design and a counterweight to the fish’s restrained palette. Metallic thread in two colours outlines the fins and adds their shine. The ground stays open black canvas, so the silhouette of the fish reads sharply with no extra outline. The tail passes beyond the red rays and almost touches the edge of the design — the movement runs from bottom to top. Ten thread colours across 72 m of thread, most of it spent on the grey-and-gold gradients of the fins.
