Description

“Best hen friends” shows two hens facing each other among stylised flowers. The drawing is done in a folk manner: flat, symmetrical and without shadows.

What the picture shows

The birds take up the middle of the design: the left one is pale, with beige wings and red tail feathers, the right one ginger, with a wide fan of a tail. Both have red combs and feet, and rows of small stitches imitating feathers run across their bodies. Tulips, daisies and round blooms in orange, terracotta and cream grow around them, with tiny stars and hearts between. The navy fabric stays as the background and is not stitched, so the composition looks like embroidery on a festive shawl. There are 22 thread colours. The hens’ feathers are marked by rows of small stitches in different colours, each bird with its own sequence. The flowers around are built from simple elements — circles, drops, teeth — and it is their repetition that makes the composition read as folk painting.
