What the picture shows

On the right the trees stand in full autumn colour, from lemon and gold to terracotta; on the left dark conifers balance them. Between them you can see the curve of a path and still water reflecting the crowns, with pale trunks and a gap of sky further back. Forty-one thread colours are needed exactly here: the autumn is made not of patches but of countless small transitions, so the foliage looks in motion. The composition is arranged to fit the shaped frame, so the corners of the scene fade softly. The water below reflects the crowns in muted tones rather than their true colour, and that is what carries the depth. The path leads the eye into the distance and is what holds the composition in its small shaped format.
