Description

“Anatomy of feelings” shows an anatomical heart entwined with flowers and grasses. The piece is graphic and calm, despite the unusual motif.

What the picture shows

The heart is stitched in pink, coral and white; the vessels at the top bend over and turn into stems — the border between body and plant is deliberately blurred. Small yellow and white flowers, dandelions, green leaves and thin twigs grow around it, and two butterflies with ochre wings sit at the right and above. The black fabric is not stitched and stays as background, so the light colours look almost fluorescent. Of the 27 thread colours, most are needed for the soft gradations inside the heart. The vessels at the top gradually thin out and turn into stems, so the border is hard to spot. Light highlights and darker hollows show on the surface of the heart, and the butterflies are worked symmetrically, with a fine pattern on the wings.
