Description

“Among the Clouds” shows a fairy-tale castle on a cliff above a river. The piece is large and detailed, with many planes.

What the picture shows

The castle occupies the upper half: white walls, a dozen towers with sharp red roofs, narrow windows, crenellated ramparts and pennants on the spires. The rock beneath is grey-brown, with cracks and ledges holding dark spruces. A river runs below — blue-turquoise water with white foam on the rapids and large boulders. Blue mountains rise behind the castle, and the sky is light with big curly clouds. The fabric is stitched completely, and the 49 thread colours work here on the distant planes and the texture of the stone. Every tower has its own roof, windows and weathervane, and separate merlons show on the walls. The spruces on the rock stand at different angles, the water at the rapids is worked in white strokes that give the sense of current, and the clouds are built from several light shades.
