Description

“A quiet blizzard” shows three goldfinches among dry grasses dusted with snow. The piece is restrained, almost monochrome, with a few bright spots.

What the picture shows

The birds are set in a triangle: two lower on the left, one higher on the right. Each has a red mask on the head, black and white wings with a yellow band, and a pale breast. Dry umbels, seed heads and thin stalks rise around them, stitched in beige, grey and pale blue, with snow lying on them. Below is a drift laid in white and grey-blue stitches. The background is light and almost without detail; the coffee fabric works as a warm base under the cool range. The 28 thread colours carry all these barely visible gradations. Each goldfinch has its own pose: one bends its head, another holds a seed in its beak, the third has turned its back. The dry umbels are built from dozens of thin rays, and it is these that take the most time to stitch.
