Description

“A fairy tale for the night” shows an eagle owl seated in a carved arch of leaves and branches. The whole piece is stitched in a single grey-graphite range.

What the picture shows

The bird is in the centre, facing the viewer straight on: the breast feathers are laid in fine rows, the wings are folded, and feather tufts rise on the head. The eyes are yellow — the only patch of colour in the whole design. A tall pointed arch of thin lines runs around it and turns at the top into a rosette with a flower and small ornament. Branches with elongated leaves grow on both sides of the bird, and two feet rest on a short branch below. The white fabric is not stitched, so the drawing reads like an engraving. The 17 thread colours are almost the whole scale from white to black. The owl’s plumage is built from small scales, each row in its own shade of grey — that is what carries the texture. The arch around is not solid: the thin lines break here and there, and bare fabric shows through them, as in a real engraving.
