Description

The Ukrainian text of the traveller’s prayer is printed on the back of this Saint Nicholas banner.

What the picture shows

On the printed icon the saint, in a mitre set with blue stones and in gold vestments, blesses with his right hand and holds a richly bound Gospel in his left. The ground is pale green and the halo red with a gold rim. All the embroidery falls on the border around the image: red beads fill the field, yellow and white beads form crosses and diamonds at the top and bottom, and the outer edge is outlined in gold. Five bead colours make this one of the richer palettes in the series, and the border looks almost ornamental because of it. The yellow and white beads are lighter than the red field, so the pattern does not merge into it.
