Three icons on one banner, with the driver’s prayer printed in Ukrainian on the back.

What the picture shows

The composition is divided into three parts: Christ Pantocrator with an open book, the Mother of God with the Child, and Saint Nicholas in a mitre — all printed on the canvas one below the other. The ground around them is what gets beaded: a dense field of dark blue and violet along both sides and in wide bands at the top and bottom, with gold beads outlining each icon and the edge of the whole piece. Against the deep blue the gold reads clearly and the images keep their place. Three bead colours in all, each with a job to do. The beaded bands run right around the piece, so the finished banner has an even, solid edge.
