Description

“Pengium” is a string art piece with a penguin in a red hat and scarf. The drawing is simple and easy to read, which makes it a good first meeting with the technique.

What the picture shows

The penguin stands face on against a light wooden base. Its back and flippers are worked in black thread, its belly and head in white, so the contrast reads from across the room. A red hat with a white pompom and a white brim sits on its head, and a red scarf is wound round the neck with one end hanging to the side. The beak and both feet are done in yellow. There are only four colours, each doing one job. The thread is stretched from nail to nail, so a dense web forms inside every shape and the wood of the base shows through it — string art is never a solid fill of colour. The nails with white heads stay visible along the outline and become part of the drawing themselves, tracing the penguin's silhouette and the edge of the hat as a fine dotted line.
