Description

“Cat Cheshire” shows the Cheshire Cat's grin under a top hat, with a line from Alice in Wonderland below.

What the picture shows

A top hat lies across the upper part of the dark base: the crown is worked in mint green, the band and the brim in lilac, and a lilac feather curls at the side. Under the hat spreads the cat's black face: two round yellow eyes with black pupils, a small pink nose and a wide white grin of interlaced threads that read as teeth. Lower still, an English inscription is laid out in black thread over nails, in two lines. Six colours are used: mint, lilac, black, white, yellow and pink. Nails outline every shape, and the dark wood shows through the thread and deepens the night-time mood of the scene. The grin curves in a wide arc and takes up almost the full width of the base, so the face reads as a sign in itself even without an outline of the head.
