Description

“Balloon” is a string art piece showing a hot-air balloon in rainbow stripes.

What the picture shows

The balloon fills almost the whole dark wooden base. The envelope is divided into vertical gores worked one after another: red, orange, yellow, lime, green, blue and violet, drawn together at the top and bottom by narrower arcs in the same colours. Fine ropes run down from the envelope to a woven basket, laid out in pale thread in a crosswise pattern that reads as wickerwork. A row of nails with light heads outlines the whole shape and sharpens the silhouette. Six thread colours give a saturated band of colour, and the dark wood between them acts as the background. The gores differ in width, so the envelope looks rounded rather than a flat circle; the darkest blue and violet stripes are gathered on one side, as if a shadow fell there.
