Description

«St.Athanasius» shows the hierarch with the Gospel: a white beard, a white omophorion with dark crosses and a violet phelonion.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown to the waist, frontally. His hair and long beard are white, his forehead high, his gaze direct. A light omophorion with dark crosses falls over his shoulders; beneath it a phelonion of dense violet worked in several close shades of bead. His left hand holds a Gospel in a red-and-gold ornamented binding, the right is raised to the chest. The halo is golden, with a beaded ornamental arch and name plaque above. Face, beard and hands remain printed on the canvas, as does the cream embossed ground — the beading is not solid.
