Description

Through an arched window in a stone wall you see the sea and a striped lighthouse — “Whisper of the wind” is built as a look outward.

What the picture shows

The window with wooden shutters stands wide open: the leaves are terracotta, the wall around them laid in pale brick and streaked with runs of paint. In the opening lie blue sea, a strip of sand, a stone jetty and a red-and-white lighthouse with a small house at its foot. A white clay jug with dry ears of grass stands on the sill, a large spiral shell lies beside it, and to the right sit a russet starfish and a woven basket of shells. The picture rests on two ranges: warm terracotta and sand for the wall, cool blue and turquoise for the sea. The smallest areas are the shells on the sill and the window bars; the largest are the sky and the wall.
