“Emerald beetle” — a large scarab with a green-and-gold shell on a black ground, framed by a wreath of dark leaves.

What the picture shows

The beetle is shown strictly from above and symmetrically: the elytra are emerald green with deep shadows, the legs and antennae bronze, and thin gold contours outline every segment. Spread wings in warm ochre show from under the elytra. Behind it a wreath of large dark turquoise leaves opens out, almost merging with the black ground — it is what keeps the composition inside the square. The whole picture rests on three groups of shades: green, gold-ochre and near-black, so the difficulty lies not in the colour range but in the number of small areas on the shell. The ground is flat and dark, so the transitions inside the shell show up especially well.
