Description

“St. Veronica” is a mini icon of the righteous saint holding out the cloth with the face of the Saviour. It is the most detailed image in the batch: a picture within a picture.

What the picture shows

The saint stands facing forward in a pale blue veil and a deep red cloak, with a blue gown and gold trim on the chest showing beneath. With both hands she unfolds a pale cloth, and on it appears the Face in a crown of thorns — a small separate image with a halo of its own, worked in warm ochre and green. Her own halo is gathered from amber rings, and the rays behind stay as print on the art canvas. Beads fill the figure, the cloth, both halos and the border. A three-line cartouche runs below.
