Description

“St. Theodore” is a mini icon of the warrior great-martyr: the saint in gold armour with a cross in his hand. An upright image of 100×150 mm, often stitched as a gift for someone of that name.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown half-length, with curly dark-blond hair and a short beard. A red cloak is thrown over his shoulder, and his chest and right arm are covered by a cuirass woven from gold, olive and amber beads in a fine scale pattern. In his raised right hand is a slim gold cross, the sign of martyrdom; below, the rounded edge of a shield in warm brown and pink tones shows behind the figure. The halo is gathered from several rings of amber beads. The golden rays behind are not stitched — they stay as print on the art canvas, and the beads sit only on the figure, the halo and the border along the edge.
