Description

“St. Macarius” is a mini icon of the venerable elder: a saint with a very long white beard and lifted palms. Format 100×150 mm, vertical.

What the picture shows

The figure takes up almost the whole field of the image. The beard falls below the chest and is worked in pale, almost silvery beads; the hair and the cape on his shoulders are stitched in the same tone. The mantle is blue, laid in two shades, with a band of red undergarment showing at the centre. Both palms are raised before his chest, turned outward. The halo is a narrow ring of gold and amber beads, while the rays behind stay as print on the canvas, so the light around the head reads as a glow rather than as stitching. A three-line cartouche runs below.
