Description

“St. Gregory” is a mini icon showing the saint half-length against golden rays. At 100×150 mm it is a small image for a shelf, a desk or a home icon corner, and it can be stitched over a few evenings.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown as an elderly man with a high forehead, grey hair and a long white beard. He wears a brick-red phelonion covered with fine pattern and a white omophorion with pale blue crosses; in his hands he holds a dark book. The halo is worked as a ring of amber beads, while the spreading golden rays behind the figure stay as print on the canvas — beads cover the vestments, the halo and the edging, so the ground shines through the stitching. A cartouche with the inscription sits at the foot of the image, flanked by red and gold corner rosettes. The face and hands are printed too and are left unbeaded, which shows plainly at this size.
