Description

“St.Clara” is a mini icon of the western saint, Clare of Assisi: a bowed figure holding a monstrance. An upright image, 100×150 mm.

What the picture shows

The saint is shown bowing deeply, her eyelids lowered. Her mantle is blue, woven from several shades — dense ultramarine at the edges through pale sky to almost white at the centre — so the cloth seems lit from within. With both hands she holds a monstrance: a dark stem and a gold case topped with a small cross. A red sleeve shows from beneath the mantle. The halo is a broad ring of amber beads, and the rays behind stay as print on the art canvas. A two-line cartouche and red-and-gold corner rosettes sit below.
