Description

“Winter magic” shows a fairy-tale toadstool house with a red roof among candy canes and holly sprigs.

What the picture shows

The cap-shaped roof is covered in red beads with white dots, and a fringe of snow hangs along its edge in small beads. Below is a pale timber wall with round windows and a dark red door outlined in beads. Striped candy canes in mint, white and red stand on either side of the house, and sprigs of green leaves with red berries lie in the corners. The snow around is marked with sparse white and silver beads. The pale, almost white ground stays printed on the canvas: the beads are not solid here — they work on the roof, the candy canes and the berries, while the drifts are left as watercolour. The white dots on the cap are set one bead at a time, so their rhythm can be varied a little to taste. The candy canes are worked in diagonal stripes and are the simplest part of the piece, a good place to start.
