Description

“Wild field” is a band of meadow flowers at dusk: lupins, bellflowers and poppies against a dark ground.

What the picture shows

The composition builds from the bottom up: dense heads of lilac, violet and blue beads fill the lower third, and orange-red poppies with dark centres burn above them. Thin stems rise between, picked out in small yellow and green beads, and the tallest spikes almost reach the upper edge. The ground shifts from dark green into blue and black and stays as print on the canvas — which is why the shining beads read as light falling on flowers at dusk. The lupin spikes are beaded as vertical columns of single beads that thin out towards the top. The poppies are dense circles with a dark centre, and the grass is marked with short slanting lines.
