Description

Violet tea gathers a teapot, heart-shaped biscuits and a pot of violets on a pale ground patterned with foliage.

What the picture shows

The teapot is outlined in green with a raspberry band of small beads across the body and its lid and handle picked out in white and pearl. The heart-shaped biscuits are edged in orange, yellow and red, and the napkin under them is worked in rows of pale blue and white. The violets on the left are set in purple, their leaves in green along the veins, and the bow below is outlined in lilac. A raspberry border runs round the edge. The pale ground with its fine printed foliage is left unbeaded. The nine colours are built around two lines, green and raspberry, and it is their repetition in the teapot, the border and the violets that makes the piece cohere.
