Description

“Variegated” is an aquarium fish with long rainbow fins on a black ground.

What the picture shows

The fish swims to the left, and its fins take up almost the whole field: they are worked in wide bands — orange and red at the top, then pink, lilac, blue and turquoise below — each row of beads following the line of a ray. The body is small and flecked in blue-green, with a dark-pupilled eye. Clear bubbles float around it as circles of pale blue beads. The black ground stays printed, which makes the colours read as more saturated, and dark gaps are deliberately left between the rays of the fins. The upper fin lifts almost to the edge of the picture while the lower one drops, and that difference makes the fish look as if it is moving. The bubbles vary in size and are scattered unevenly.
