Description

“Under the Christmas tree” shows a penguin in a red cap and scarf sitting beside a present under a decorated tree.

What the picture shows

The tree fills the upper half: dense needles in two shades of green beads, dark red baubles and small gold lights. Below stands a red box with a large white snowflake and a bow worked in silver beads. The penguin looks out from behind it — a white front, a black back, yellow feet and a red fringed scarf. A window with glazing bars and a brick wall are printed in the background on the right, as is the snow on the ground. On art canvas the beads do not cover the surface, so the background is deliberately left soft while the beads hold the tree, the present and the penguin. The needles are worked in short slanted stitches in two shades, so the tree looks three-dimensional. The finest work is in the gold lights between the branches: single beads scattered unevenly, like a real string of lights.
