Description

“Umka” shows a white bear cub in a striped scarf beside a snowy fir tree.

What the picture shows

The cub is worked in white and silvery pearl beads, with black dots for the eyes and nose; a scarf of pink, white and dark stripes hangs from its neck. It sits half-turned, reaching a paw towards the tree on the right, which is filled with dark green and emerald beads, white bead lights and a green star on top. The background is a turquoise-blue wash scattered with white and clear snowflakes made of single beads. The printing on the canvas stays visible between the rows of beading, so the surrounding snow reads as light rather than dense. The tree and the cub touch only at the tip of a paw, so a good deal of open blue field is left between them, and that space is what keeps the scene quiet.
