Description

“Ultramarine” shows blue irises with a dragonfly above them, set against an old Italian document.

What the picture shows

The flowers run diagonally from bottom to top: the petals move from pale and cornflower blue to deep blue and violet, with yellow-orange beards at the centre. Leaves and buds are dark green, long and curved. A dragonfly hovers on the left, its clear silvery wings worked in pale beads. The ground stays as printing: a yellowed form with a crest and the words “Municipio di Amatrice”, handwritten lines and stamps, with strands of pearls hanging from above, laid out in white and cream beads. Blue leads here, while the rest of the sheet is deliberately kept light and matt. The petals are worked across in short rows, so the shift from pale blue to violet stays soft; the beards are the only warm patch in the whole piece.
