Description

“Tigre wings” shows a monarch butterfly with one wing in beads and the other built from flowers.

What the picture shows

The right wing is worked in orange, black and white beads to the monarch pattern: dark veins, pale dots along the edge, a few turquoise accents. The left wing is replaced by flowers — brown, orange and turquoise, with small beads standing in for stamens. The body and antennae are black with light flecks. Splashes of dark, orange and blue beads scatter across the field. The white ground stays printed on the canvas: the beads are not solid here, and it is exactly the contrast between the empty field and the dense wing that holds the composition together. The monarch wing is made of large pale cells outlined in black, so the dark grid goes in first and the orange fills it afterwards. The small splashes across the field are set last, one bead at a time.
