Description

“The heart of the holiday” is a fir tree assembled from coloured ornaments on an almost bare pale ground.

What the picture shows

The tree is built not from branches but from shapes: drops, discs, hearts and curls worked in green, red, crimson, blue, yellow and lilac beads, overlapping until together they give the outline of a fir. A small red star crowns it and a short trunk in golden beads sits below. A blue snowdrift lies under the tree, edged with a row of blue. The ground — a pale wash with warm ochre and pink streaks — stays as printing, and it is that emptiness that makes the silhouette read so clearly. The ornaments are beaded in different ways — some filled solidly, some outlined only — and it is that difference that keeps the tree from falling apart into separate blobs.
