Description

“The fragrance of travel” shows a cup of coffee on a newspaper, with the outlines of European cities rising behind it.

What the picture shows

A large white cup and saucer stand in the centre, worked in pearl and beige beads; the coffee itself is dark brown with a pale swirl of foam. A spoon and a strand of pearls lie beside them, laid out in small pale beads. Below is an open newspaper with printed city names: Warszawa, Helsinki, Bucaresti, Paris, Washington. A warm ochre-orange ground carries the silhouettes — the Eiffel Tower, a windmill, a pagoda, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and a row of domes — all outlined in beads rather than filled in solidly. Most of the beading goes on the cup and the newspaper, while the city silhouettes are kept light and barely sketched, so they read as a memory rather than a map.
