Description

“The birds are singing” is a round folk-painting composition: two birds among flowers and scrolls on plain white canvas.

What the picture shows

The design runs in a circle. Two birds with yellow and black plumage and green flecks on their wings face one another in the middle. Around them are large flowers with red hearts and yellow petals, black berries, small leaves and long tendrils that curl past the edge of the circle. There are only four bead colours — yellow, red, black and green — and that restraint is what keeps the piece within folk tradition. The white ground is not beaded at all: it stays bare canvas and works as part of the drawing. Petals and berries are beaded as tight rings, while the fine tendrils are single beads set along the printed line. The effect is of an ornament painted with a brush and then dusted with glass.
