Description

“The Alchemy of Nature” is a golden-green beetle inside a thin circle of geometric lines.

What the picture shows

The insect is seen from above: the wing cases are worked in emerald and gold beads with a fine sheen, the thorax darker, the antennae and legs bronze and splayed out. A thin beaded circle crossed by several straight lines runs around the beetle, like an alchemical sign. The ground is dark grey with printed pale twigs and leaves that are left unbeaded. The beads work only on the insect and the geometric figure, so the drawing of the ground shows through the whole composition. The beetle’s legs splay at different angles and are not mirrored, so the insect looks alive rather than pinned. The straight lines of the circle pass behind the beetle rather than over it, so the sign does not obscure the insect.
