Tea-party pairs a tulip-painted teapot with two cups and saucers and a slice of lemon. A cosy scene set for two.

What the picture shows

The teapot is outlined in red, its lid worked in red and gold rows, and the tulips on its side beaded in red with green stems and leaves. The upper cup carries a black-and-white checked band and a gold rim, the lower one a fine green sprig, and the third small pink flowers over a lilac field. The lemon slice is set in yellow and white. A border of red, blue and green rows runs round the edge with a flower in each corner. The checked ground stays as print. The nine colours are placed symmetrically — whatever appears on the teapot returns on the cups and in the corner flowers — which keeps the piece balanced.
