Description

Surprise shows a teddy bear peeking out from behind a half-open door with a wrapped present held in front of him. The mood is quiet and a little conspiratorial — nobody has spotted him yet.

What the picture shows

The door, the curtain and the window frame are worked in pale blue, deep blue and white beads, from almost translucent to saturated. Silver beads mark the handle and hinges, and a warm golden row with hanging drops runs along the sill. The bear holds a light-blue box tied with a pink ribbon and a small white tag, with red fabric showing under his paw. The bear himself — cream fur, black nose — stays as full-colour print on the canvas; the beads outline the shapes and add shine where it matters. The eight bead colours are used sparingly: the blues carry the door and the present, silver goes to the small metal details, gold to the sill.
