Description

“Summer rain” retells an ordinary summer shower in a decorative, almost ornamental way: a blue bird sheltering under a striped umbrella.

What the picture shows

The open umbrella above the bird is divided into segments — green, yellow, orange, lilac, blue — edged with a line of small beads, with a drop hanging from the handle. The bird itself is sky blue, with a curled tail and a white eye; branches of red and green leaves, small flowers and spirals surround it. The background is built from broad patches of turquoise, yellow, pink and violet and stays as print on the canvas: the beads go only on outlines, petals and the dotted inner frame. The umbrella segments are stitched in rows of beads along each wedge, so the stripes stay even even close up. The bird is outlined rather than filled: only the body line, the curled wing and the dots on its breast are beaded, the fill stays print.
