Description

Spreadeagle shows two children lying in summer grass with their arms flung out, looking up at the sky. The drawing is naive, almost like a child’s dream.

What the picture shows

The first child’s hair is worked as flame-like curls in orange and gold, the second child’s braids in brown and amber. The striped sleeve and shirt are built from white and red beads in rows that follow the folds of the cloth, while the blue lines around the figures are set in saturated blue. White and green dots scatter across the grass as small flowers, and the red spiral blooms in the corners are coiled from red and gold beads. The faces, the hands and the grass itself stay as painterly print on the canvas. The eight colours are placed as patches across the whole field rather than as a solid carpet, so the piece stays light and keeps the painterly manner of the original.
