Description

“Silver serpentine” is a white snake winding among blue flowers.

What the picture shows

A long body curves across a dark grey ground: the back worked in silver and white beads flecked with grey, the belly paler, the small head raised with a tiny eye. The snake folds into several smooth loops, like a ribbon. Around it are dark blue leaves and pale blue flowers with yellow centres, framing the composition above and below. There are only eight colours. The grey ground between the loops stays as printing on the canvas, and it is what separates the coils so they do not merge into one pale patch. The flowers around use three shades of blue, and the darkest of them lie beneath the snake, setting off its pale colour. The snake’s head is a little larger than the coils of its body, and it is what draws the eye first.
