Description

“Respectable peacock” is a peacock’s head in profile with a lavish coloured crest.

What the picture shows

The bird faces left. The neck and head are worked in blue, cobalt and emerald beads with a fine scaled pattern, the beak pale, the eye ringed in red and white. From the back of the head the crest bursts backward: long feathers in orange, turquoise, violet and yellow that fan out and reach the edge of the picture. The ground is a pale watercolour with thin geometric grid lines; it stays printed, so all the light falls on the bird. The crest feathers are beaded a single bead wide, which is what makes them look weightless. The ring around the eye is three beads wide, and that is what makes the bird’s gaze read against the blue of the head.
