Description

“Red velvet” is a single large poppy in close-up, opening across almost the full width of the piece.

What the picture shows

The flower fills most of the field: the petals run from bright red and coral to deep cherry, with a black heart and dark strokes at the base. To the right of the bloom sit a dark green leaf and a few thin stems worked in green beads. The ground is warm ochre-beige with a faint printed pattern, and a vertical ornamental band in green and gold with a row of small beads runs down the right edge. The contrast between the densely beaded red flower and the almost untouched beige ground is what holds the composition: the beading is not solid and the background stays as printing. The shift from light to dark is worked in rows, so the petals look ruffled even from close up.
