Description

“Night couple” is drawn decoratively, with patterns instead of real plumage: two owls on a branch in a blue night.

What the picture shows

The upper bird is the larger — turquoise and green breast in rows of beads, pink and violet patches on the wings, yellow eyes with black pupils. The lower owl is paler, yellow-green, with big round eyes and pink flecks. Both sit on a black branch that crosses the picture diagonally. Coral-pink saplings with small flowers grow on the right, lilac petals show on the left. The deep blue ground with its white dots stays as print on the canvas: beads carry the owls, the branch, the trees and a few of the stars. The upper owl's breast is worked in rows that lie like scales, while the wings are filled with patches of colour without a strict outline. Both birds' eyes are ringed in black, so the gaze reads from a distance.
