Description

Midnight Owl shows a small owl on a branch against a large moon, with the night sky swirling around it in blue spirals.

What the picture shows

The sky is the main task here: spirals and circles are worked in blue, pale blue and turquoise beads, each ring with a white or yellow centre. The branches are laid out in amber, brown and black rows that run into the curls on the left. The owl itself is only partly beaded — the outline of the head, the ear tufts, the eyes with black pupils and the yellow dashes on the chest; the warm plumage and the yellow disc of the moon stay printed on the canvas. That split gives depth: the beaded blue sky comes forward while the painted bird sits quietly inside it. Eleven colours are built around a pair of blue and ochre. Small turquoise circles at the top echo the rhythm of the big spirals.
