Description

“Lace star” shows an openwork five-pointed star ornament on dark graphite canvas.

What the picture shows

The star is built from scrolls: white matt beads run the outline, while spirals and loops of blue, silver-grey and lilac beads fill the inside. A loop and a beaded thread at the top make the star look as if it hangs. The whole piece rests on four colours, and the sense of volume comes from the density of the beading and the direction of the rows. The dark grey canvas is left empty — on art canvas the beads do not cover the surface, and here the emptiness is deliberate: the lacework glows against the dark ground. The scrolls are beaded one at a time along the printed line, so the work feels more like drawing with thread than filling an area. On the dark canvas every unevenness shows, but the finished star looks almost lit from within.
