Description

“Lace heart” shows an openwork heart ornament with a fan of rays above it on graphite canvas.

What the picture shows

The heart is built from scrolls: an outer contour of white beads, with spirals, arcs and small rings of blue, grey and lilac beads inside. A fan of fine rays opens above the heart, each ray ending in a bead, and a beaded cord runs up from it. There are only four colours, so the design reads through shape and rhythm rather than through blocks of colour. The dark graphite canvas around it stays bare: on art canvas the beads are not solid, and the dark ground is part of the idea here. The rays of the fan are beaded outwards from the centre, each as its own line, and they set the rhythm of the whole piece. Inside the heart the lines run in spirals, where the main thing is to keep to the printed contour.
