Description

“Lace ball” shows a round Christmas ornament with a lace pattern on a dark ground.

What the picture shows

The ball is filled with scrolls and small leaves worked in white, blue, grey and lilac beads; the lines run from the centre to the edges, which makes it look convex. A cap with a loop sits on top, and a line of beads runs up from it as if the ornament were hanging on a thread. The pattern is denser than in the star and the heart of the same series, hence the higher bead count. The graphite canvas around is left free of beads: on art canvas they do not cover the surface, and the dark field lets the lacework glow. The pattern of the ball is made of small leaves and rings that repeat but never quite alike — the direction of the rows is what makes the ball read as round. The cap at the top is the densest passage and works as the accent.
