Description

“Jazzy” shows a street musician with a horn under a lamp, surrounded by signs and a stave that winds across the whole picture.

What the picture shows

The hatted figure in the centre is beaded in shifting green, blue and violet; beside it stands a black wrought-iron lamp with a yellow light. A LIVE JAZZ sign hangs at the top, BLUE and a vertical HOUSE of BLUES plate with a red heart on the right, and a Bourbon street sign on the lamp at the left. Staves with black notes and a treble clef run through the background. That background — patches of turquoise, pink, yellow and white — stays printed on the canvas; beads cover the figure, the lamp, the signs and the notes. The lamp is worked in black beads with a matt sheen, so it reads as a silhouette even against the busy background. The notes are laid as single beads along the staves, and they are what hold the rhythm of the composition.
