Description

Hohloma – 1 is a round folk-painted posy: big red flowers, a pink bell-shaped bloom, green leaves and small blue berries on a white ground.

What the picture shows

The petals of the red flowers are worked in coral and deep red, their centres in yellow, orange and black, with separate strands of beads fanning out as stamens. The pink bloom is outlined in pink and lilac with blue dots inside. The leaves are filled with several greens along the veins, and the small blue berries are set in threes and fours. The white ground is left as bare canvas, which keeps the composition light rather than crowded. Twelve colours make this the widest palette in the group, and nearly all of them go into the flowers: the red blooms alone need yellow, orange and black for their centres.
