Description

“Gingerbread house” is a fairy-tale cottage built of gingerbread and sweets under a violet-blue evening sky.

What the picture shows

The house stands in the centre: brown walls and roof with beaded “icing”, a yellow light in the round window, a Christmas wreath on the door and garlands of green sprigs hung with baubles and lollipops across the whole front. The roof is dusted with white and icicle beads hang from its edge. Around it lie pink, orange and purple sweets, spiral lollipops on sticks and peppermint rounds, while large candies and a fly agaric sit by the doorstep. In the sky the tail of a falling star and a big yellow star are picked out in beads. Sky and snow stay as watercolour printing on the canvas: the beads carry only the house, the sweets and the star trail. The colours are deliberately unmuted — crimson, turquoise and lime side by side, as on real Christmas sweets — and the dense rows of beads along the outlines give the front some relief.
