Description

Evening shades shows a narrow lane in an old town, steps between white houses and warm light under the archway at the end.

What the picture shows

The walls and steps are worked in pearl and white beads, in rows along the edges of the buildings, the corners and the railings. Roofs and cornices are laid out in burgundy and dark red, the shutters in yellow and turquoise. The tree on the right is made of dense clusters of yellow and green beads, and the black branch crossing the right side is one continuous row of dark beads. The cobbles below are marked with burgundy and golden arcs. The lilac sky, the distant tower and the warm archway stay printed on the canvas: the beads outline the architecture and add light rather than covering the picture. Eleven colours hold a cool dusk with a warm centre.
