Description

“Emerald wings” is a dragonfly with cream wings on a pale watercolour ground.

What the picture shows

The insect spreads all four wings across the width of the picture: they are worked in cream, sand and gold beads, the veins stitched darker, with a turquoise cast appearing near the body. The body is emerald green and finely flecked, with large dark eyes and a long abdomen trailing down. The pale ground carries blurred ochre patches and printed leaf outlines that are left unbeaded, with gold dots scattered above. The wings are beaded more sparsely than the body, so they really do look transparent. The dragonfly’s eyes are two large dark beads, and they are what makes the head readable at so small a scale. The abdomen is divided into segments by darker rows, which makes it look flexible.
